- Baie d'Authie
The Authie Bay is located between the departments of Pas-de-Calais and Somme. It is more precisely enclosed between Berck-sur-Mer to the north and Fort-Mahon to the south. Part of this territory is home to a diverse natural environment: indeed, there is an exceptional fauna and flora. The Baie d'Authie is well worth a visit during your stay on the Opal Coast! Let's discover this preserved area.
However, beware, the Baie d'Authie is also a dangerous place that should only be visited at ebb tide. To plan your visit safely we recommend that you check the tide times before you go. Furthermore, it is strongly advised against trying to reach Berck-sur-Mer from Fort-Mahon (and vice versa). Indeed, dangerous currents sometimes form in the sea accompanied by quicksand.
3 good reasons to go to the Baie d'Authie
See the seals
See the seals
Go to the Berck-sur-Mer seawall at the end of the Promenade du Professeur Jean Debeyre. Here, every day of the year, it is possible to observe the seals of the Baie d'Authie in their natural environment. It is a real spectacle when the tide goes out and leaves sandbanks in its wake. Dozens of seals come every day to rest on what are called resting places. A little on land, a little in the water, the mammals are visible at a glance: a surprising encounter that will delight the whole family. In addition, other marine organisms and numerous species of fish also live in the Baie d'Authie!
Contemplate the fauna & flora
Contemplate the fauna & flora
The Baie d'Authie is a savage area where nature lovers and those who enjoy peace and quiet will love to wander. The surrounding fauna and flora are particularly appreciated. For example, you will find beautiful wild flowers such as the Sea Lilac: picking is allowed, but limited to one bunch per person. The Baie d'Authie also abounds in many types of shellfish such as cockles, which can be found all year round on the beach. Please note that cockle fishing is forbidden. The good news is that you can still find this small shellfish in the many fishmongers in the area! However, it is still possible to enjoy the pleasures of fishing on foot with your family by collecting mussels in the authorised fishing zone.
Depending on the time of year, it is also possible to see many different species of birds, such as the white stork. On your way, you will also come across a number of signs explaining the surrounding nature, which will give you a better understanding of this authentic natural environment.
Walking in the dunes
Walking in the dunes
The dunes of the Baie d'Authie have kept their wild state. During your walk, you will be asked to stay on the marked path so as not to damage the dunes. In the dunes of the bay, you will also find the salicorne or sea buckthorn: a small orange berry that can be eaten (within reason, of course). The estuary is one of the last wild bays in Europe, so it is important to keep it that way!
Many group walks and guided tours are regularly organised in the Authie Bay, especially during the high season. Do not hesitate to contact the tourist office of Berck-sur-Mer or Fort Mahon to find out more.
